2009 Design Competition and Website Virtual Tour Entries

Will be featured on our Website, published in SDH/G Lifestyles magazine, and recognized at a special Joint Chapters Awards Ceremony Gala this coming September.

A major part of marketing our chapter and our members this year will be our 2009 Design Competition, the winners of which will be announced with a special layout in the September issue of San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles.  We will have a full-page ad in that issue announcing our newly updated Website Virtual Tour, to highlight National Kitchen & Bath Month in the coming October issue.  SDH/G’s October publication will also feature some of the design winners, with editorial content pointing to our Virtual Tour.  In this October issue, we plan to have a Chapter Directory, which will also present the opportunity for special advertising to our membership.

CATEGORIES

The Competition is divided into the following six categories:

• Small Kitchens (less than 50 sq. ft. of countertops)
• Large Kitchens (more than 50 sq. ft. of countertops)
• Small Bathrooms (less than 55 sq. ft)
• Large Bathrooms (more than 55 sq. ft.)
• Powders Rooms (not containing shower or tub)
• Other Rooms (an open category including Great Rooms or Small Spaces, Wine Cellars, Home Entertainment Centers, Home Offices, Laundry Rooms, Wardrobes, Showrooms, and Garages)  If you have a great project, let us see it!

On the entry form, please select the category that best represents your project.  The Chapter reserves the right to reassign a category, if appropriate.  Each project may be entered into only one category.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SUBMISSION CHECKLIST

The Designer of Record on all projects must be an NKBA member and all projects entered must be the work of NKBA members.  Projects may not have been previously published in a major national consumer publication.

All materials must be received by Tuesday May 26, at 11am  Your digital photographs (please limit to 6-12 photos), plus floor plan, interpretive drawings, and design statement, may be emailed to Deb Wand, AKBD, Website Chairperson, deb_wand@yahoo.com.  If you are unable to email these materials, you may alternatively mail or deliver a CD of your photographs along with your Virtual Tour CD, and printed hardcopies of the plans, drawings and design statement to Borrelli Cabinetry + Design at 4421 Park Blvd, San Diego 92116.  The Board will require the original signed Completed Entry Form and signed Photo Release Form, along with your entry fee check or Acteva receipt, which should also be delivered or mailed to Borrelli Cabinetry + Design.

To avoid disqualification, please include the following materials with your Submittal.  Your name should only appear on the completed Entry Form and Entry Fee (check or Acteva receipt).  Please use your NKBA Identification Number to identify all other materials, so that your anonymity is preserved through the judging process.

• Completed Entry Form (include your NKBA Identification Number), plus a signed Photo Release Form from the project owner/client.  These forms will be posted and can be downloaded from the San Diego Chapter Website at http://sdcankba.org/pdf/CompetitionForm.pdf
• Floor Plans (must be ½”, ¼”, or metric scale)
• Interpretive Drawings (in elevation or perspective), as required to aid in describing the project.  “Before” photos may also be included.
• Design Statement (200-300 words) describing challenges and solutions
• Digital Photographs (limit 6-12 photographs), plus a Virtual Tour CD.  Professional photography is highly recommended.  As a suggestion, PreviewFirst.com has developed expertise in project photography and creation of virtual tours at competitive rates.  They are an NKBA San Diego member firm and can be accessed at www.PreviewFirst.com.
• Entry fees are $225 for one project, $150 for a second project, and $100 for each additional project and must be included with your submission(s).   This includes the design competition plus automatic posting of your project(s) into the NKBA San Diego Website Virtual Tour.  You do not need to be a contest winner to be included in the Virtual Tour.  Entry fees may be paid by check or posted to a credit card through the Acteva link http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaid=182557

JUDGING

A well-designed space requires many elements to make it a classic.  An award-winning project must provide both great creativity and stunning presentation that captivates the viewer, transforming an ordinary space into a memorable visual experience. 

The SoCal Chapter of NKBA will be judging our submittals based on five core elements:  Safety and ergonomics (with reference to the NKBA Kitchen & Bathroom Planning Guidelines), elements and principles of design, design planning, creativity, and presentation.

WINNING ENTRIES RECOGNITION

Contest winners will be recognized in the September issue of San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles plus receive premiere placement featuring their project on the Chapter Website – an advantage in highlighting work to potential clients.

Contest winners will also receive a second complimentary Virtual Tour Advertising Spot (value $175) on our Website as it becomes updated with contest entries, plus paid admittance for two to the September Joint Chapters Awards Ceremony Gala in San Juan Capistrano.
